Transportation

Octopus card

The most convenient electronic payment method for fares of public transportation is by Octopus card. You can buy an Octopus card (requiring a deposit of HKD 50 plus a top-up amount of your choice) in a Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station (including the Airport Express/Railway/Subway Stations) once you arrive at Hong Kong. Not only that an Octopus card can be used to pay fares on public transportation, it can also pay for meals at restaurants on HKUST campus. The exact amount will be deducted automatically. If the remaining value is less than HKD 500, you can return the Octopus card with full refund (HKD 50 deposit plus the remaining value) at any MTR Customer Service Centre before leaving Hong Kong (see Getting a Refund here).

From HK Airport to Conference Hotels

To Conference Lodge, Crown Plaza or Holiday Inn Express at Kowloon East: If this is the first time you visit Hong Kong, and you do not know the public transportation well, it is most convenient to take a taxi from the airport to your destination directly. The expense is around HKD 350 (USD 45). You shall need cash in local currency to pay the taxi driver. It is useful to print the name of your hotel and university in Chinese (see the file here) so that you can show this to the driver.

To Crown Plaza or Holiday Inn Express at Kowloon East: If you prefer to take a public transportation, you may take the bus Citybus A29P from the airport and get off at the terminal station. The hotels are within 3 minutes walking distance from the terminal station. The fare is HKD 42 one-way, which can be paid by Octopus card or by cash.

To Other hotels: Either by Taxi directly to your destination, or by MTR, or by a combination of taxi and public transportation. For example, take MTR first, exit at a nearby MTR station and then take a taxi directly to your destination. To locate nearby MTR stations to your destination, see the system map.

Generally speaking, Google map is a very useful tool to obtain reliable recommendation of routes and transportation options to your destination in Hong Kong. It may also allow you to see the traffic condition in some busy areas.
